The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP)

  • Addresses the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical well-being of students holistically.
  • Provides opportunities for students to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes they will need to address complex situations or issues responsibly in the future.
  • Ensures breadth and depth of understanding through the study of eight subject groups.
  • Requires students to study at least two languages (the language of instruction and an additional language of their choice) to enhance their understanding of their own culture and that of others. At San Patricio, our bilingual approach means pupils have two languages of instruction and learn a third language (and can also become fluent in a fourth one through extracurricular activities).
  • Allows students to engage in community service activities.

Empowering Students for Lifelong Success

Our Secondary MYP education works closely with the Diploma Programme on different levels to facilitate our students’ transition and success at the end of MYP4:

  1. The MYP curriculum, by focusing on similar approaches to learning, establishes the foundation for academic achievement in the next stage.
  2. The MYP teachers are also teaching at the DP level, and therefore already know the students, making the transition seamless.
  3. Our unique Pathways and POPs (Personal Options Plan) programme prepares the best individual DP subject choices for each student following personalised guidance, individual assessments and interviews to ensure student choices fully align with their academic profile, interests and university course aspirations. The IB Organisation has considered this preparation programme as one of the best in the world, and our average DP exam scores have soared as a result.

Middle Years Programme Subjects

The MYP is organised into eight subject groups, a collection of related courses grouped into a common category, which together represent a broad and balanced curriculum:

Secondary School Educational Approach

MYP Approaches to Learning (ATL)

ATL are at the centre of the MYP teaching and learning philosophy. This unifying element across all MYP subject groups forms the foundation for independent learning and encourages the application of knowledge and skills in unfamiliar situations. These skills help students understand how to learn better and are developed through their MYP learning experiences.

Secondary Education Programmes

Conceptual Understanding

Concepts are important ideas that have disciplinary and interdisciplinary relevance. MYP students in our Secondary School in Toledo use concepts to inquire into issues and ideas of personal, local, and global significance, and to examine knowledge holistically.

Activities for students in Secondary School around Toledo

Service as Action (Community Service)

Action (learning through hands-on experiences) and service have always been shared values of the IB community. IB students strive to help others and positively impact people's lives and the environment. Service as action is an integral part of the programme, especially in the MYP Community Project. They also take part in a series of Service as Action opportunities during each year of the MYP.

Secondary School Assessment

The assessment standards of the MYP are rigorous and consistent around the world, based on established criteria that teachers must use, not in comparison to other students' work. Teachers create a variety of assessment tasks that allow students to demonstrate their level of achievement concerning the specific objectives formulated by the IB.

The MYP assesses the range of skills students acquire throughout the curriculum, including the ability to successfully complete written exams. Some typical MYP assessment tasks include research and open-ended problem-solving activities, organised debates, tests and exams, practical experimentation, analysis, and reflection.

Assessment aimed at determining the competency or level of achievement of a student generally occurs at the end of a course of study or an inquiry unit.

Entrance Assessments for MYP

Students applying for our Secondary School in Toledo must share their academic reports for the last two years as well as a motivation letter. They will then go through a CAT4 Assessment. Regarding language requirements, all students applying for entry to MYP should preferably have a good level of English and Spanish (A2 for MYP 1&2 and B1 for MYP 3&4) although no official language qualifications are required. International students will receive additional support in English for classes taught in Spanish.

Study in English at Secondary Schools of Toledo

Languages in Secondary School

Developing multilingual skills is crucial for success in our globalised world, which is why we prepare our students to become fluent in up to four languages.

San Patricio's bilingual teaching during the MYP stage ensures students achieve native-level fluency in English and Spanish. Starting from MYP3, international students can opt for Spanish as a second language if they choose the English stream option, allowing them to take most subjects in English instead of Spanish.

Furthermore, students can choose either German or French as an additional language for their secondary education. They can also prepare for official language certifications in English, French, and German at our school.
